SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Fire officials in California say at least 21 people were treated for burns after attendees of an event for motivational speaker Tony Robbins tried to walk on hot coals.
The San Jose Mercury News reports (http://bit.ly/OJ9ha3 ) that at least three people went to a hospital and most suffered second- or third-degree burns.
Robbins was hosting a 4-day gathering called "Unleash the Power Within" at the San Jose Convention Center. Witnesses say on Thursday, a crowd went to a park where 12 lanes of hot coals were on the grass.
Robbins' website promotes "The Firewalk Experience" in which people walk on super-heated coals.
Witness Jonathan Correll says he heard "screams of agony."
Fire Capt. Reggie Williams says organizers had an open fire permit and emergency personnel were on standby.

This is as old as the hills of India.

There is a reason why such events are held at night or first thing in the morning...and usually on grass. The trick is to have cool feet, preferably damp with dew from the grass to start with and to place one's weight mostly on the outside of the foot and heel while moving quickly. A ten foot length also means that each foot need only touch the coals 2-4 times.

Concentration is not a prerequisite...stupidity and gullibility is. ;-)

Kensho
to extend your accurate observation
hot wood coals are POOR conductors of heat, thus there is a porous airy quality that allows for a split second of comfort before stepping off. The moisture barrier is important, thus walking on a damp lawn helps but this is NOT necessary as skeptics in India have done this same firewalk in daylight on macadam on hot wood coals w/o burns--maybe a slight blister!--and they were smoking cigarettes and being totally irreverent, no positive thinking allowed!

The key here is that the skeptics already got over their "fear" before walking the coals through scientific analysis, thus no manipultion by a gruru like TR getting you to chant for "power" to overcome fear and go into a semi-trance before marching the coals. The gaol in TR workshops has nothing to do w getting over fear---that is the bait---it is about putting the crowd into a suggestible state, then promoting the next event, "Go thee out into the world and recruit for me for free!" thus sayeth Tony the Id King.

In India they used to run the coals twice as far as TR clients.

Also, the same principle holds for fire walkers in Hawaii that wlk on heated, "firey" lava rock---the lava rock employed is highly porous..... 8) 8)

T 'robbing-ins' is a product of the old NLP ruse that uses the art of suggestion to get people to change habit and thought patterns---not much research to suport this but it dos work for some people with phobias or who are contemplating change already.

TR has deals with some wealthy and truly gullible clients to be oncall status for $1 million a year.

But as the great Godfather, the Don, hath proclaimed, "It is just business."
