A Tenino man pleaded guilty last week to last summer’s murder of a Yelm woman on the Yelm-Tenino Trail.
Bernard “Keith” Howell III, 27, was convicted of first-degree murder in Thurston County Superior Court.
Howell faces more than 26 years in prison for the death of Vanda Boone, 60.
Howell was found Aug. 8, 2010 with Boone’s body in his truck.
A Thurston County Sheriff’s deputy pulled Howell over in front of Parkside Elementary School in Tenino after being flagged down by a man saying Howell had asked him to help move a body.
Boone was found wrapped in plastic and a sleeping bag in the passenger seat.
Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock said Boone’s throat was slit and she had blunt force trauma to her head and neck.
Other contributing factors to her death include asphyxia due to strangulation or smothering.
Police believe Boone was attacked by Howell while she was near Churchhill Road on the Yelm-Tenino Trail.
Howell was arrested and booked into Thurston County Jail on suspicion of murder and first-degree theft.
He told police “he wanted to give her a free funeral and not have the family pay any money.” He reportedly left the scene in Boone’s vehicle to gather supplies including a sleeping bag, plastic and a 10-pound weight.
In a later interview, Howell changed his story and told police he didn’t murder Boone, but found her body, became aroused and had sex with the corpse.
During initial interviews, Howell claimed to hear voices. He was evaluated at Western State Hospital and initially deemed incompetent to stand trial.
Howell was admitted to Western State Hospital until he was deemed competent to stand trial.
A trial was set for this month prior to Howell changing his plea.
