Rescue the Family - Ben Shenton - Survivor of the Anne Hamilton-Byrne Cult in Australia - The Family

Unread post by David McCarthy »

14 YEARS BEHIND THE WIRE
Ben Shenton
Formerly Benjamin Saul Hamilton-Byrne
‘Rescuing the Family’ was birthed from a thirty-year journey Ben’s life has taken since being rescued at 15 by the police on August 14 1987 from Australia’s most notorious cult called ‘The Family’. Its followers believed the leaders claim that she was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ.
Ben grew up believing this woman, Anne Hamilton-Byrne, was his mother.

The Family was originally written about in a book ‘Unseen, Unknown and Unheard’ published in 1995 by Sarah Moore formerly known as Sarah Hamilton-Byrne. A ninety-eight-minute documentary called ‘The Family’ and a book of the same name, released in February 2017, has further dealt with the history, ideology and ongoing impact of The Family.

Over the years, Ben’s has told his story throughout Asia Pacific and been interviewed by radio and print media from Australia and places as far away as Chile and Britain.

Through ‘Rescuing the Family’ Ben seeks to share lessons he’s learnt on how to successfully build a family by navigating through the dangerous ideologies and widely espoused methods on bringing up children that negatively impact families and therefore societies

An incendiary, heartbreaking investigation into one of Australia's most notorious cults, and the scars its victims still bear today.
Anne Hamilton-Byrne was beautiful, charismatic, delusional and damaged.
She was also incredibly dangerous. Convinced she was a living god, Hamilton-Byrne headed an apocalyptic sect dubbed The Family, which was prominent in Melbourne through the 60s and 70s.
With her husband Bill, she acquired numerous children – some through adoption scams, some born to cult members – and raised them as her own. Isolated from the outside world, the children were dressed in matching outfits, had identically dyed blonde hair, and were allegedly beaten, starved and injected with LSD. Taught that Hamilton-Byrne was both their mother and the messiah, the children were eventually rescued during a police raid in the mid 80s, but their trauma had only just begun.
Melbourne director Rosie Jones (The Triangle Wars, MIFF 2011) has spent years digging into disturbing mysteries of The Family.
With survivors and cult members telling their stories on camera (the now adult children's resilience is inspiring), alongside the Australian and international police who worked the case, this confronting MIFF Premiere Fund-supported documentary exposes not just what happened within the still-operating sect but also within the conservative Melbourne community that allowed The Family to flourish.

60 Minutes Australia

She’s the embodiment of evil.
A woman whose terrify deeds have destroyed many lives.
For years, Anne Hamilton-Byrne ran a bizarre cult known as The Family.
But this was no ordinary family. Children stolen at birth, brainwashed, beaten, even given mind altering drugs like LSD.
The list of abuses as her isolated retreat outside Melbourne goes on. It was a true house of horrors.
Throughout it all Hamilton-Byrne was helped by a group of unquestioning followers, including a sinister group of women known as ‘The Aunties’.
To these disciples, she was the reincarnation as Jesus Christ. Her word, gospel.
Hamilton-Byrne spent years dodging the truth about what went on inside The Family.
But in 2009, for the first time, she spoke to 60 Minutes.

Watching the 60 Minutes interview I’m reminded of the term ‘The Banality of Evil!.
And how it also operates in RSE but hidden in plain sight.
How those that follow the cults leader often display similar sociopathic traits, a banal indifference to the loss and suffering inflicted on others..
just so long they profited and gained in some way, Could be financial, religious, artistic, social standing, political power Etc..
The cults psychological mechanisms of abuse also feeds the needs of the cults leader and its hardcore followers and handlers.
The suffering and loss of others, including children, is brushed aside as inconsequential collateral damage,
and well worth the price for 'their great work' and efforts.
However...
In the light of day where sanity shines through..
it reveals what it is, a lowlife shallow swamp of well heeled and scripted subhuman creatures preying on the most innocent.
