QUOTE: "A new book 'Incognito' by neurologist David Eagleman examines this problem calling these parts of the brain "rivals". The friend/family role will "outrival" the counseling/expert role no matter what you know about the cult."

Thanks for the reference Joe. Ordered the book and I am finding it to be an excellent read.
Some of David Eagleman's interesting & refreshing thoughts can also be found at: http://www.possibilian.com/

yer welcome kensho

as exciting as brain science has become due to advances in technology and biochemistry the scientists are cautious with conclusions. Cults and armchair intellectuals however are not!

eg, Eagleman's work has broad implications for the judicial system that is already applying certain "tests" based on the new science to determine if someone is fit for society--mainly, how does one test for psychopathy or "model prisoners" who are clever charming liars that will nevertheless continue their criminal behavior once released? Eagleman mentions there are some realiable tests now but it took decades to research and develop the instruments.

I have encountered members of an "atheistic" psychotherapy cult http://www.freedomainradio.com/ that disconnects young [college age mostly] members from family totally and soon after conversion. The leader/members abuse the latest research in brain science and child psychology to shore up their cult view.

Just goes to show that a little information can have negative effects as well as positive...both with potentially far reaching ripple effects.
Since the stint with RSE, I tend to take everything with a rather large grain of salt attached to a CHEEZIE :-)

Thanks again.
